ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic's annual Community Safety Fair will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center Arena, 30 Civic Center Drive, S.E., in Rochester, Minn. This year's event will combine family fun and safety activities for children. The event is free and open to the entire Rochester community.
"We're excited to offer the safety fair for the community each year. The activities are designed to be fun and teach safety skills to parents and small children," says Dawn Nelson, pediatric critical care outreach coordinator at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital.
Interactive family activities allow children to:
* Role-play 911 calls with dispatchers.
* Practice emergency escapes from a simulated smoke-filled trailer.
* Buckle up correctly with a seatbelt simulator.
* Discover school bus safety on a real bus.
* Learn winter weather and skiing safety.
* Take home tips on poison and gun safety.
"Everyone knows that all of us — especially children — learn best by doing. The role-playing activities help children to remember these important safety tips," says Sharon Munns, Mayo Clinic emergency services outreach coordinator.
The safety fair will not include car-seat inspections. For more information on upcoming car-seat clinics, car-seat inspection or the safety fair, please call 507-255-5066.
