ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic today announces four "Harmony for Mayo" concerts that will be held in September. Concerts are held on Mondays from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in various locations throughout Mayo Clinic's campus. All "Harmony for Mayo" concerts are free and open to the public. Advance tickets are not required.
Sept. 9: Violinist Eric Grossman and pianist Michele Grossman will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Building, first floor. They will perform Mozart's Sonata in A Major K526 and Cesar Franck's Sonata in A Major. Eric Grossman, who was educated at the Juilliard School, has performed as soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra under Zubin Mehta and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Michele Grossman is a graduate of two prestigious music programs — Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She won the Indiana University Mozart Festival Competition, the Indiana University Concerto Competition and the Des Moines Guild Young Artist Piano Competition. The brother and sister duo have performed more than 100 concerts in the United States and Europe. Their debut CD includes performances of Ravel's Tzigane and Beethoven's Third Violin Sonata.
Sept. 16: Singer/songwriter Peter Mayer will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Building, first floor. The Minnesota native will perform a program of original folk and pop music. Mayer performs more than 130 shows a year at concert venues throughout the United States. He was nominated in 1998 and 2001 for Minnesota Music Awards in the category of Best Folk Artist. Also, he has twice received Minnesota Music Award nominations in the category of Best Folk Album. Mayer released his fifth CD, "Elements," in November 2001.
Sept. 23: Mariachi Serenata will perform traditional mariachi music in the Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, subway level. The six-piece Mexican-American band led by Frank Trejo will play romantic songs and various forms of dance music, including bolero, cumbia and polka. Mariachi Serenata performs with the following traditional instruments: guitarrón, vihuela, trumpet, violin and acoustic guitar.
Sept. 30: Elinor Niemisto and an ensemble of harpists will perform classical music in the Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, subway level. Niemisto serves as principal harpist with the Rochester Orchestra and Chorale, and the La Crosse (Wisc.) Symphony. She teaches harp to private students, and at St. Olaf College and Carleton College, in Northfield, Minn., and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
The Siebens Medical Education Building is located at 100 Second Ave. S.W. The Charlton Building, part of Rochester Methodist Hospital, is located at 10 Third Ave. N.W. The "Harmony for Mayo" concert series includes a variety of music to suit all tastes. Audience members are welcome to bring a lunch to these concerts.
"Harmony for Mayo," a music series for Mayo patients, visitors, staff and the public, is sponsored by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with the Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester, Rick Kvam, music director, and Terri Skelton, executive director. The series is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
