ROCHESTER, Minn. — Anticoagulants can be lifesavers, but they also carry risk. Too much medication and you may have bleeding problems; too little medication and your blood clots too quickly. Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource provides these safety tips to remember if you are taking an anticoagulant:
* Learn to check your international normalized ratio and know what your target should be.
* Take your medication at the same time every day. Don't stop or change your dosage unless directed to do so.
* Don't switch brands when refilling your prescription.
* Avoid sports or activities with high risk of injury.
* Consult your doctor before traveling. Carry your medications with you.
Taking an anticoagulant requires you to be vigilant about your daily routines, diet and activities. Careful attention to details can help protect you.
