JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 6, 2002 — "Exposure to Light: From Darkroom to Digital World," an exhibit of photographs taken by Mayo Clinic psychiatrist Dr. Elliott Richelson, is on display in the Leek Gallery at Mayo Clinic now through Jan. 6.
Richelson's exhibit is a pictorial essay of digital photographs describing color and darkness, light and shadow, concealment and reflection. Pictures in this installation were taken in France, Switzerland, Japan, Hawaii and Jacksonville.
As a young boy, Richelson developed an interest in capturing images by watching his father take photographs. Richelson exhibited his works while attending Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., and while a consultant in Psychiatry and Pharmacology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Richelson is a published psychiatrist, scientist and photographer. He is involved in the study of the action of drugs used to treat psychiatric disorders. His research, which is preclinical at this time, extends to the development of potential new drugs for the treatment of schizophrenia, depression and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
The Leek Gallery is a space for artistic display between the medical activities of the clinic's Davis Building and those of the Mayo and Cannaday buildings. The gallery is named in honor of Ruthe and Nathaniel Leek, whose gift to Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine helps the center support the art and science of healing. The Leek Gallery is housed in the Mayo Building at Mayo Clinic, 4500 San Pablo Road. It is open to patients and the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays.
