Most patients are first evaluated as outpatients, usually by a specialist in internal medicine or a neurologist, in order to get a thorough assessment of the whole patient before focusing on specific organ systems and problems.
Neurosurgical consultation focuses on specific aspects of the patient's condition that may or may not benefit from a surgical intervention. This may require further specialized studies such as X-rays, MRI, CT, angiography, electroencephalography or electromyography. Some of these tests may be conducted in the hospital. Based on information developed during a patient's assessment, a recommendation for a surgical procedure may be made.
