Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Subspecialty Group

Mayo Clinic offers a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment of the disorders of the motor unit, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and its related disorders. The ALS group offers comprehensive services in the areas of diagnosis, conventional and experimental treatment protocols, rehabilitation, nutrition and pulmonary care. Mayo specialists work in close collaboration to fulfill the patient and caregivers' needs.

The ALS group is active in clinical and basic science research to improve care options for patients with ALS and ALS related diseases. The multispecialty ALS clinic meets every Tuesday. This includes an ALS support group for patients, family members and caregivers of ALS patients who are at seen in ALS clinic on that day.

Research

The Mayo ALS group is active in both basic and clinical research. Clinical research efforts include clinical trials with experimental agents, ongoing epidemiological studies, natural history studies and electrodiagnostic research.

Basic science research includes identifying mechanisms of cell death in various animal and tissue models of ALS.
