Counselors with special training and experience in treating addictive and behavioral disorders lead the stop smoking programs. Physicians oversee the treatment programs and organize multidisciplinary care according to each patient's health needs. Individual counseling programs at each Mayo Clinic location incorporate three key elements:

  • Counseling to help patients understand and change their behaviors
  • Pharmacologic therapy to help ease the discomfort of withdrawal from nicotine
  • Follow-up to prevent relapse

Mayo Clinic in Rochester offers an intensive, eight-day residential (live-in) program for people who need intensive help in stopping smoking.
