Myoclonus

Overview

Myoclonus is the name for sudden, brief involuntary movements such as "sleep starts." The muscle jerks of myoclonus usually aren't a problem, but occasionally they may be a symptom of some other disorder. If you experience unexpected muscle movement regularly, it's a good idea to have a checkup.

Finding the cause of your myoclonus may involve a long process of elimination, but doesn't always. Sometimes your doctor will find a cause that can be relieved by removing a spinal lesion, correcting a metabolic abnormality or stopping a medication. Then the involuntary movements may quickly disappear.
