Multiple System Atrophy

Diagnosis

Mayo Clinic doctors trained in nervous system conditions (neurologists) and other doctors evaluate people who have multiple system atrophy. Doctors are experienced in diagnosing multiple system atrophy and other conditions.

To diagnose your condition, your doctor may review your symptoms and medical history and conduct a physical and neurological examination. It may be difficult to diagnose multiple system atrophy because its symptoms are similar to those of Parkinson's disease and other conditions. Your doctor may also diagnose other conditions you may have with multiple system atrophy, such as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder or other sleep disorders. Your doctor may conduct tests to rule out or diagnose other conditions.

  • Autonomic function tests. Your doctor may use these tests to determine if several of your body functions are working properly, including your blood pressure, heart rate and other functions.
  • Bladder function tests and urine analysis. Bladder function tests and urine analysis can help your doctor see any changes in your urinary function.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An MRI is a detailed imaging test of your brain that can help your doctor rule out other neurological conditions.
  • Overnight oximetry. This test measures the oxygen in your blood while sleeping. It is done with a simple device that you take home and attach to your finger just before going to sleep.
