Multiple Sclerosis

Treatment in Minnesota

At Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, members of the multiple sclerosis group specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of demyelinating disorders. The group is also involved with laboratory research and clinical trials to better understand the cause of MS and to develop better treatments.

Treatment Team

Many people with multiple sclerosis (MS), suspected MS or related disorders are evaluated each week in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The majority are seen first by neurologists with expertise in all neurological disorders. In addition, five specialists within the department have special expertise and interest in this group of disorders. These MS specialists are available to physicians in other departments (General Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rheumatology, Psychiatry and Psychology) who request their assistance in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning.

MS Nursing Staff
Patient and caregiver/provider education is essential after a diagnosis of MS is confirmed. The MS nurse meets with the patient and family/caregiver for general education about the disease and to address common questions about issues such as diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. The MS nurse also discusses MS symptoms and their management, including guidelines for contacting the physician. The MS nurse also assists in educating patients and families about MS therapies, their administration, and side effect management.

The MS nurse is instrumental in providing resources to ensure the best possible quality of life for the MS patient and the family/caregiver and may act as a strong patient advocate. They efficiently obtain and share information about community and other resources to assist patients with day-to-day living and disabilities.
