Mohs Surgery

Research

Numerous research articles by Mayo Clinic doctors on the optimal use of Mohs surgery for managing skin cancer demonstrate the excellent results achieved with this type of surgery. Ongoing research focuses on treatment outcomes of Mohs surgery for a variety of skin (cutaneous) tumors, including studies on rare tumors such as dermatofibrosarcoma, atypical fibroxanthoma and Merkel cell carcinoma. Research also includes studies on unique populations of people such as those who have undergone solid organ transplant.

Using Mayo's unique database, researchers conducted several important studies on common skin cancers — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma — showing increases in incidence at younger ages, especially in women.
