Mitral Valve Disease

Overview

Mayo Clinic is one of the largest and most experienced medical centers in the country for treatment of mitral valve disease. Patients benefit from Mayo Clinic's state-of-the-art facilities, leading-edge medical treatment, and access to appropriate clinical trials and new treatments for mitral valve disease. Heart surgeons at Mayo Clinic have extensive experience and expertise in repairing and replacing mitral heart valves and have developed innovative surgical techniques.

Diagnosis

Frequently, patients learn they may have mitral valve regurgitation during a routine clinic visit when their doctor, using a stethoscope, detects an abnormal heart sound (heart murmur).

At Mayo Clinic, diagnosis begins with a complete physical examination by a medical team that specializes in heart care. Patients will be asked about their general health, including signs and symptoms, and a history of heart disease in their family. Read more about mitral valve disease diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Treatment options for mitral valve disease include careful monitoring, medications or heart valve surgery (repair or replacement). Read more about mitral valve disease treatment options.

About Mitral Valve Disease

The heart has four valves, which open and close to keep blood flowing in the proper direction through the heart. The mitral valve connects the heart's upper-left chamber (atrium) to the heart's lower-left chamber (ventricle).

Mitral valve stenosis — or mitral stenosis — is a narrowing of the mitral valve. This narrowing causes the valve to not open properly and to obstruct blood flow between the left chambers of the heart.

Mitral valve regurgitation, or mitral regurgitation, occurs when the mitral valve doesn't close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward in the heart.
