Metabolic Disorders

Testing for Metabolic Disorders

Mayo Medical Laboratories (MML) offers comprehensive testing for metabolic disorders, from newborn screenings to follow-up testing and diagnosis. Mayo Clinic offers newborn screening for more than 30 metabolic disorders.

The Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at Mayo Clinic uses tandem mass spectrometry and other state-of-the-art processes to identify metabolic disorders.

Newborn Screening

Mayo Clinic offers newborn screening for more than 30 metabolic disorders. By diagnosing metabolic disorders before symptoms appear, in many cases, children can be treated effectively. Left undiagnosed, metabolic disorders can lead to irreversible developmental delays, mental retardation and even death.

Regulations vary significantly among states regarding required screenings for newborns, ranging from a minimum screening for three disorders to a maximum of 34. Mayo Clinic bridges the gap in state newborn screening programs by offering the Mayo Supplemental Screening Program to interested hospitals.
