Pulse Generator and Electrodes

Illustration of a pulse generator implanted in the chest, with wires leading to electrodes implanted in the brain of a man.

In DBS, the surgeon implants an electrode into a targeted group of nerve cells in an area of the brain that has been identified on an MRI study and electrophysiology recordings. The electrode is secured to the skull, then connected via a thin subcutaneous wire to a pulse generator implanted under the clavicle.
