Mayo Clinic has designated parking ramps for patient use, however there is a fee for parking. Discounted parking rates are available for extended stays. Read more about traveling to Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
If a patient cannot be transported by car, alternative transportation is available. Social workers can help determine which transportation is appropriate and can provide referrals, cost estimates, and help with coordination.
Ambulance
An ambulance is used if the patient requires medical treatment or life support during transport. Ambulances are staffed by full-time medical technicians and have medical equipment to meet the patient's needs. Medicare and private insurance reimbursement is strictly defined, and generally based on medical certification of need. Prior approval is frequently required by private insurance companies.
Stretcher and Wheelchair Services
Stretcher and wheelchair vans are available if the patient needs that type of transportation but does not require medical treatment or life support during transfer. Because these additional support services are not needed, costs are less than ambulance service. These services are not covered by Medicare, but may be covered by Medical Assistance.
Air Ambulances
Air ambulances are available if the patient must be transferred a long distance and requires special support services during transfer. All flights require prior financial approval by the air ambulance service. Insurance coverage depends upon individual policies. Social workers will provide information on air ambulance options, help investigate insurance coverage and coordinate transfer arrangements.
Escort Service
Mayo Clinic has escort services available for those who need wheelchairs or assistance to get to various appointments around the campus. This service is free of charge.
