Lung Transplant Road Race

G22 - May 2006 - Lung Transplant Road Race

Intro: How easy would it be for you to get up off the couch and run a 15K race? If you're like many of us, you'd be pretty sore if you could do it at all. Now imagine running that race after having a lung transplant. It's possible, and the man you're about to meet is living proof.

Video Audio
Total running time 1:33 AFTER WARMING UP WITH SOME DEEP STRETCHES, 48-YEAR-OLD BOB LUMAYE IS READY TO RUN A 15K. WHICH IS PRETTY AMAZING.

Bob Lumaye
Had Lung Transplant

"TO THINK THAT 17 MONTHS AGO TODAY I WAS ON THE OPERATING TABLE HAVING A TRANSPLANT."
AFTER A HUG AND KISS FROM HIS WIFE, BOB IS OFF.
Bob Lumaye "I'D LIKE TO FINISH IN ABOUT TWO HOURS' TIME."
BOB IS RUNNING FLANKED BY MAYO CLINIC LUNG TRANSPLANT SURGEON OCTAVIO PAJARO AND PULMONOLOGIST DR. CESAR KELLER.

Cesar Keller, M.D.
Mayo Clinic Pulmonologist

"YOU BECOME EXTREMELY CLOSE TO THESE PATIENTS. THEY BECOME YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY."

VO: Running

AND DRS. KELLER AND PAJARO WATCHED THEIR FRIEND GO FROM BARELY BEING ABLE TO BREATHE TO RUNNING THIS RACE. BOB'S LUNGS WERE DESTROYED BY A DISEASE CALLED PULMONARY FIBROSIS. WITHOUT A TRANSPLANT ...
Bob Lumaye "PROBABLY I WOULDN'T LIVE FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS."

To Running

YOU SEE, A NORMAL LUNG IS MADE OF SPONGY TISSUE, OR AIR SACS, THAT ARE DESIGNED TO EXPAND AND FILL WITH AIR WHEN YOU BREATHE. PULMONARY FIBROSIS CAUSES SCARRING THAT PROGRESSES OVER TIME. THE LUNGS GET STIFF, PREVENTING YOU FROM GETTING THE OXYGEN YOU NEED TO LIVE. MEDICATIONS OFTEN DON'T WORK FOR PATIENTS LIKE BOB. BUT THE TRANSPLANT SAVED HIS LIFE.
Bob Lumaye "IT'S JUST BEEN PHENOMENAL."

Reporting

DR. KELLER SAYS ONE OF THE REASONS BOB CAN RUN NOW IS THAT HE EXERCISED - HE WALKED - AS MUCH AS HE COULD BEFORE THE OPERATION.
Bob Lumaye "IT WOULD TAKE ME A GOOD 28 MINUTES JUST TO WALK A MILE."
BUT THIS DAY, BOB CROSSED THE FINISH LINE OF A 15K IN 2 HOURS AND 10 MINUTES.
FOR MEDICAL EDGE, I'M VIVIEN WILLIAMS.

Tag: Bob wants to encourage you to consider being an organ donor if you're not already. Thousands of people die each year waiting for organs. Bob says he can't describe how grateful he is to have received the gift of life.

Not all lung transplant recipients will be able to run races. But the operation gives all of them a second chance. For more information, log on to our Web site at ...
