Mammography Study

G34 - August 2006 - Mammography Study

Intro: Health care can be confusing. Take screening tests like mammograms for example. Your doctor may schedule one for you, but then he or she may not have enough time to explain all the details. And not knowing exactly what you're getting into can lead to confusion and anxiety. Doctors at Mayo Clinic did a study to find out if giving women information before they have a mammogram makes a difference in their experience.

ANNETTE SINN LEARNED ABOUT FALSE-POSITIVES BY ENROLLING IN A STUDY TO FIND OUT IF WOMEN UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AND BENEFITS OF MAMMOGRAMS. THE STUDY DIVIDED 1,400 WOMEN INTO TWO GROUPS. ONE DID NOT GET INFORMATION ABOUT MAMMOGRAMS, THE OTHER, THE GROUP THAT ANNETTE WAS IN, DID.

"NOT ALL THINGS THAT THEY FIND ON YOUR MAMMOGRAM COULD BE CANCER. SO IT KIND OF EASES YOUR MIND. THEY GIVE YOU PERCENTAGES."

To Graphics:

Percentages

All mammograms

  • 10% get called back

Biopsies

  • 80% do not have cancer

VO: to Annette with kids

PERCENTAGES SUCH AS: OF ALL WOMEN WHO GET MAMMOGRAMS, 10 PERCENT WILL GET CALLED BACK FOR ADDITIONAL VIEWS. OF ALL WOMEN WHO HAVE BIOPSIES TO EXAMINE A SPOT THAT SHOWED UP ON THE MAMMOGRAM, 80 PERCENT WILL NOT HAVE CANCER. THE KEY MESSAGE FOR WOMEN LIKE ANNETTE IS THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BIOPSY OR ADDITIONAL IMAGES TAKEN, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE BREAST CANCER. AND THAT INFORMATION REDUCES ANXIETY DURING THE BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROCESS.

Tag: Another limitation of mammography is that it does not detect all breast cancer. But it remains the best way to detect breast cancers at an early stage.

Dr. Pruthi says her study confirmed what she had expected: that getting information to patients about medical tests before they have to take them reduces anxiety and keeps people well informed. For more information, visit our Web site at ...
