F33 - August 2005 - Radiation for Lymphoma

Intro: Swollen glands. If you've ever had a bad cold, you've probably had them. Those tender little glands under your jaw are a sign that the white blood cells in your lymph nodes are working to fight the infection. So most of the time swollen glands are a good thing. But if they don't hurt and don't go away, they could be a sign of something more serious. Lymphoma -- a cancer of the lymph system. More on the latest treatment from Mayo Clinic.

THE LYMPHOMA THAT STOPPED BUDD IN HIS TRACKS DIDN'T START WITH TYPICAL SYMPTOMS - SWOLLEN LYMPH GLANDS ON THE NECK OR IN THE ABDOMEN. INSTEAD A TUMOR FORMED NEAR HIS SPINE.
Budd Severino "I WAS SUFFERING WITH SEVERE BACK PAIN."
DR. LAURA VALLO HELPED BUDD GET TREATMENT FAST.

"RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING OUR PLAN WAS OUTLINED. CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIATION AFTERWARDS."

To animation

LYMPHOMAS ARE A DISEASE OF THE LYMPH SYSTEM - THE SCAVENGER SYSTEM OF THE BODY. LYMPH CELLS, OR LYMPHOCYTES, FIGHT INFECTIONS AND KEEP FLUID BALANCED IN CELLS. TUMORS CAN FORM ANYWHERE IN THAT SYSTEM. CHEMOTHERAPY COMPLETELY REMOVED BUDD'S TUMOR. BUT TO MAKE SURE THERE WERE NO HIDDEN CELLS LEFT OVER, DR. VALLO THEN ATTACKED THE AREA WITH RADIATION, DECREASING BUDD'S RISK OF RECURRENCE BY ALMOST 20 PERCENT.
BUDD SAYS THE TREATMENT WASN'T EASY. BUT NOW HE'S DISEASE-FREE, BACK IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, TUNING UP FOR THE NEXT RACE WITH HIS RACING PARTNER.
Budd Severino "THE NUMBER 15 IS MY CAR. THE NUMBER 57 IS MY SON'S CAR."
HIS SON FRANK, WHO'S ALSO A CANCER SURVIVOR. BUT ALL THAT'S IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR.
Budd Severino "JUST LIKE OUR OPPONENTS."
FOR MEDICAL EDGE, I'M VIVIEN WILLIAMS.

Tag: Budd's form of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was very aggressive. Other types are less so and may require different treatment. Of all people who are diagnosed with this disease, up to 80 percent survive if diagnosed early.

The other kind of lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease is less common, but responds well to treatment with a cure rate of almost 90-percent. For more information on lymphoma, log onto our Web site at ...
