Macular Degeneration

Prevention

Getting older and having a family history of the disease are both major risk factors for developing macular degeneration. While these factors are uncontrollable, there are other measures that have been shown to prevent or delay macular degeneration. These therapies are best followed before the disease develops.

Antioxidants

Eating a nutritionally balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits is one of the most effective ways to promote good retinal health. Foods rich in antioxidants are those with high levels of vitamins A, C and E. It is best to incorporate antioxidants in foods — in particular, leafy green vegetables contain antioxidants in levels thought to improve eye health. Patients are advised to talk to their doctors before taking antioxidant supplements, as they may interact with other medications.

Supplemental vitamins & minerals

A major study (called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, or AREDS) found that for those with moderate to advanced macular degeneration, a daily high-dose vitamin (A, C and E) and mineral supplements (Zinc) reduced the risk of further vision loss. It is important to talk to your doctor about a supplements, as they may interact with other medications or simply not be right for a particular patient.

There is also increasing evidence that the antioxidant lutein (found in egg yolk, corn and spinach) and omega-3 fatty acids (such as in fish oil) may reduce chances of developing wet AMD.

In addition to the two preventive measures above, it is also important to take these simple steps to protect vision.

  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Stop smoking
  • Manage other diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.)
  • Get regular eye exams
