Lymphedema

Treatment

Although no cure exists for lymphedema, Mayo Clinic physicians can identify cause(s) and provide patients with an individual treatment plan to reduce swelling and discomfort. The swelling that occurs with lymphedema tends to increase over time without treatment and may lead to thickening of the skin, restricted motion of the arm or leg, and possibly infection. Patients should seek care as early as possible.

Mayo Clinic physicians tailor the lymphedema treatment program to the patient's needs. Customized therapeutic options may include these approaches, depending on what is causing the swelling:

  • Multilayer compression bandaging
  • Individualized exercise program
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Skin care education
  • Pneumatic pumps
  • Compression garments/devices

If physical therapy is recommended, treatment may take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the severity of the swelling and the response to treatment. Length of stay will be determined at initial evaluation and modified, depending on response to treatment. Many times treatment can be continued closer to home, after obtaining the initial evaluation, recommendations and treatment.
