Lung Volume Reduction Surgery

Treatment in Minnesota

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is a world leader in developing and testing of lung volume reduction surgery. Chest (thoracic) surgeons work closely with specialists in pulmonary medicine and rehabilitation to provide patients with closely coordinated care in a single location.

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota also has a premier, state-of-the-art pulmonary rehabilitation program, provided to patients before and after surgery to build their lung capacity and optimize the benefits of LVRS. Read more about the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was one of 17 patient treatment sites, and had among the highest volume of patients, for the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT.) The positive patient outcomes demonstrated by NETT led the federal government in 2004 to begin paying for lung volume reduction surgery for appropriate Medicare patients.
