In most cases, transplant recipients must stay close to the hospital for a time following transplantation. Mayo has a limited number of long-term housing units nearby.
These units are furnished one-bedroom hotel suites with a kitchenette and a living area. Each unit has two double beds and a pullout sofa. There is a laundry facility and outdoor pool at the hotel complex. A free shuttle service to Mayo Clinic, grocery stores, pharmacies and shopping centers is also provided.
Details regarding costs of these units can be obtained from the transplant social worker during evaluation.
The support group is made up of pre- and post-transplant patients and their families. The goal is to educate patients and to provide support and encouragement. The group meets at 11 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. The group is led by a representative from Social Services and a chaplain. The Tuesday meetings offer speakers from different areas of transplantation.
Each specialty is covered during an 18- to 19-week period. Thursday meetings are an open format for patients and caregivers to address concerns. Discussions cover advanced directives, anesthesiology, pharmacy, infectious diseases, finances and insurance, nutrition, nursing, hepatology, laboratory work, surgery, diabetes, physical therapy and blood bank.
