Mayo Clinic doctors and researchers have made a number of important contributions to the field of liver transplantation, including:

  • The new allocation system for liver transplantation (MELD Score) was first proposed, designed and tested by doctors at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
  • Doctors at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota pioneered a treatment and transplant regimen for patients with unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma, offering selected patients the opportunity for a cure for a highly lethal disease.
  • Mayo researchers have found novel therapies and strategies for hepatitis C.
  • Innovative research and treatment protocols for patients with obesity and liver disease were created by Mayo doctors.

Currently, Mayo Clinic researchers are investigating treatment approaches for patients with tumors, alcoholic liver disease and other disorders.
