Diagnosis

Because many liver diseases are complex and involve several body mechanisms, Mayo Clinic specialists work together to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Tests may include:

• Blood tests. Liver function tests and other blood tests check for specific liver problems or inherited conditions.
• Imaging tests. X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ultrasound and magnetic resonance elastography are common tests.
• Tests of liver tissue. Doctors remove and test tissue from your liver (liver biopsy).
• Genetic tests. Family members can be screened for the presence of inherited liver diseases.
