  • Freezing Kidney Tumors

For this year, 2007, the National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 50,000 people will be diagnosed with kidney cancer. Many will have surgery to remove the tumors. But some people are not able to have an operation because of other medical problems. In that case doctors at Mayo Clinic offer another, less-invasive option. It's called cryoablation.

  • Hand-Assisted Kidney Removal

Doctors at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville say hand-assisted laparoscopic kidney removal is just as effective as the standard procedure in eradicating renal cancer. Hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy gives the surgeon and the patient the best of both purely laparoscopic nephrectomy and the traditional procedure with its open incision. The surgery involves making an abdominal incision large enough to accommodate the surgeons hand and two smaller incisions for laparoscopic tools. Patients who have this procedure generally have less pain in recovery, have a faster recovery and spend less time in the hospital.

  • Kidney Tumor Ablation

Cancer. A frightening word, but it doesn't have to mean the end, especially if it's diagnosed and treated early. A new procedure for cancerous tumors of the kidney now leaves the kidney intact, and the patient with barely a stitch. No need for open surgery, and many patients can go home the same day.

  • Partial Kidney Removal

Imagine going to the doctor for a routine visit and finding out you have kidney cancer. That's what happened to the man you're about to meet. Treatment for kidney tumors has generally meant removal of the entire kidney. That's not always the case anymore. Doctors at Mayo Clinic say that removing only the tumor and saving the rest of the kidney may mean a healthier life for people like Joe Jacques.

  • Radiofrequency Tumor Ablation

  • Surviving Kidney Cancer

If you have kidney cancer, you might not get symptoms until it's rather advanced. Not long ago a diagnosis like that was bad news. But now, thanks to technology, teamwork and medical expertise, people are beating this deadly disease.
