Keratoconus

Treatment

Mayo Clinic offers all available treatment options for keratoconus. Treatment depends on the progression of the condition and may include:

  • Correction with glasses or soft contact lenses.
  • Correction with rigid corneal contact lenses. Mayo contact lens fitters have decades of experience in customizing and fitting contact lenses to abnormally shaped corneas.
  • Correction with scleral contact lenses. These lenses cover the white part of the eye and vault over the cornea. They are a good option for patients whose only other treatment alternative is surgery. Mayo contact lens fitters have significant experience in fitting these special lenses. The precision necessary to correctly fit scleral lenses can be challenging for eye clinics that primarily fit regular contact lenses.
  • Cornea transplant for severe cases.
