How are rotations and fellows matched?
The Administrative Fellowship Program is designed to meet long-term organizational staff needs. When setting up rotations, the primary consideration is the program goals; secondary are immediate organizational needs and opportunities at a given time.
When these have been clearly identified, a match is made with an individual administrative fellow according to his or her capabilities, interests and need for development.
Can administrative fellows influence the rotation decisions?
If an administrative fellow has a strong interest in a given area, every effort is made to provide an experience in that area. At the same time, the administrative fellow is expected to be flexible and responsive to organizational needs and opportunities.
Administrative fellows are asked during rotation planning discussions to think about the overall experiences they would like to have at the end of two years to make them viable and competitive candidates for positions that are a match for them.
What core experiences have been identified for administrative fellows?
Standard rotations or exposures include:
- Education Administration
- Human Resources
- Management Engineering
- Practice Administration
- Research Administration
In addition, an effort is made to give each administrative fellow an opportunity to experience a Mayo Clinic site other than his or her base location. This may be achieved through a rotation in Jacksonville, Florida; Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona; Rochester, Minnesota; or a Mayo Clinic Health System practice.
How do administrative fellows function within Mayo Clinic?
Administrative fellows may fill short-term role assignments (for example, covering for parenting and medical leaves) or critical project assignments, particularly when there is advance notice. It depends on the need, who is available during that time, and whether the available fellow has the minimum skills, competencies and capacity to meet the need.
The program director helps guide and coordinate rotational and project assignments and meets regularly with the fellow for rotation planning and coaching.
How are fellows assigned to administrative work areas?
The administrative leader typically contacts the site program director with a description of the need and the general experiences and opportunities available. These details are shared with the administrative fellow during rotation discussions. Rotations are established once an appropriate match is found.
What other elements are considered when setting up rotations?
The most successful rotations occur when both the fellow and administrative leader are mutually interested in working together. Both sides work together to understand needs and expectations, in order to ensure a good match and optimal rotation.
