Child care

Mayo Clinic staff members have long praised Rochester as an ideal community in which to raise a family. The school system is one of the best in the state, and good, affordable housing is a top priority of the community.

Plenty of quality services and programs are available to assist families with the care and education of their children. Many address the unique needs of those who work late or rotate shifts or weekends. Child Care Aware and Child Care Resource and Referral are nonprofit organizations serving parents, professionals and employers.

A wide range of organized children's activities are available, including opportunities in music, dance and theater. Thousands of children participate in local sports programs, including soccer, hockey, football, baseball, softball, volleyball and tennis. There are more than 30 neighborhood playgrounds.

A number of community partnerships dedicated to youth enrichment and development are available through Olmsted County, including the Rochester Area Family YMCA. Parents Are Important in Rochester (PAIIR) is a parent-child education program available to all families with children from birth to kindergarten enrollment.

Partners and family members of Mayo Clinic employees often are interested in continuing their education while living in Rochester. In addition to the wide range of health care education opportunities offered through Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, several universities, including the University of Minnesota Rochester, collaborate to serve the region's higher education needs.

There are also 40 public schools, 46 private schools, two charter schools and a community college in the Rochester area.
