Mayo Clinic requires at least an associate degree for all medical coding positions. People with medical coding diplomas or certificates are not qualified for medical coding positions at Mayo Clinic.
All medical coder positions at Mayo Clinic require at least one of these credentials. Refer to the descriptions of medical coding job types for details on which credentials are acceptable for specific positions.
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
The RHIT, RHIA and CCS credentials are obtained through the American Health Information Management Association, while the CPC credential is obtained through the American Academy of Professional Coders.
Mayo Clinic is hiring experienced medical coders — coder II positions — to work from home. While telework is evaluated on an ongoing basis for all positions, Mayo Clinic expects all new medical coding staff to work on-site for one year to complete training and gain proficiency.
New graduates are eligible to apply for available coder trainee positions.
