Clinical assistants work with physicians and other health care professionals to anticipate and respond to patient needs and the requests of the health care team.

A clinical assistant is responsible for coordinating the details of the patient's visit by:

  • Scheduling appointments
  • Preparing the patient for his or her appointment
  • Completing pre-examination record information
  • Managing the flow of patient material
  • Communicating scheduling delays or changes
  • Serving as a direct contact and resource to the patient

Work schedules are primarily day shifts, Monday through Friday.

Medical secretary

Medical secretaries help optimize the use of the health care provider's time and resources. Depending on the specific assignment, their tasks may include:

  • Transcribing medical dictation
  • Maintaining calendars for health care providers
  • Composing and coordinating correspondence
  • Overseeing travel management
  • Maintaining committee minutes
  • Developing documents for publication or presentation

Work schedules are primarily day shifts, Monday through Friday.

Patient appointment coordinators facilitate patient visits and support health care providers by anticipating and responding to patient needs and requests of the health care team.

Patient appointment coordinators use patient-specific information to accurately determine the nature of an appointment request and independently schedule and confirm patient appointments.

The patient appointment coordinator is responsible for:

  • Determining appropriate appointment area and medical acuity
  • Managing department and division appointment calendars
  • Pre-scheduling appropriate tests and consults
  • Performing other related clerical duties

Work schedules are primarily day shifts, Monday through Friday. There may be telework options.
