Neuroscience Nursing Specialties

Epilepsy Monitoring - EI63
This 8-bed radial design unit provides nursing care for adult and pediatric patients undergoing continuous epilepsy monitoring for seizure disorders. Patients are monitored for classification of seizure type, medication adjustment, or presurgical evaluation.

Schedule option:

  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend

Neurology - DO2D
This 36-bed unit provides care to adult neuromedical patients. Primary nursing is the care delivery system utilized, which is further enhanced through multidisciplinary conferencing. Neuroscience nursing practice is advanced by a specialty committee structure, specialty-based orientation, and staff education. Neurosurgical patients may be cared for on this unit, and expertise in the care of these patients is maintained by scheduled rotations of the nursing staff to the neurosurgical unit.

Schedule options:

  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend
  • 12-hour shifts, with every third weekend

Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU - MB8DE
This 20-bed intensive care unit is one of the largest neurosurgical/neurological facilities in the nation. This highly specialized unit provides quality care to adult critically ill neurologically impaired patients, including head, spinal cord trauma, and a variety of surgical procedures. In addition, the unit provides care and support for patients and families going through the organ donation process. Prolonged monitoring and state-of-the-art intracranial pressure monitoring are two of the latest patient care technologies used here. About 150 new patients are admitted to this unit per month so it is a fast-paced, high-acuity unit where attention is focused on close monitoring of the patient's neurological status. The interdisciplinary team consists of neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care service physicians, RNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, dietitian, clinical nurse specialists, and nursing education specialists.

Schedule options:

  • 12-hour shifts, with every third weekend
  • 8-hour shifts, with every other weekend
  • 12-hour shifts, with every other Saturday

Neurosurgery - MB9DE
This 28-bed unit provides care to adult neurosurgical patients. Primary nursing is the care delivery system utilized, which is further enhanced through multidisciplinary conferencing. Neuroscience nursing practice is advanced by a specialty committee structure, specialty-based orientation, and staff education. Neuromedical patients may also be cared for on this unit.

Schedule options:

  • Straight 8 hours, every other weekend
  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend
  • 12-hour shifts, with every third weekend
