Hematology/Oncology Nursing Specialties

Bone Marrow Transplant/Hematology - EI94
This radial unit with a Hepa Air Filtration system is designed to protect immunosuppressed patients from airborne infections. There are 12 inpatient rooms, a two-bed outpatient treatment room, and an outpatient exam room. Nurses provide care for patients undergoing autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplants and peripheral stem cell infusions. As part of the Mayo Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs and also provides care for patients with hematological disorders not undergoing bone marrow transplant. Nurses working on the unit have additional education to provide services including: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, blood transfusion, and intensive antibiotic intravenous therapies. Emotional support and teaching are other important care components to the prolonged hospitalization of these often acutely ill patients.

Schedule options:

  • 12-hour rotating shift, every third weekend
  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend
  • 8-hour rotating, every other weekend

Hematology - EI74
This 26-bed bridged radial design unit specializes in hematology. The unit provides acute inpatient and outpatient nursing care to patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, various hematopoietic disorders, and solid tumor cancers. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery, or death. Inpatient nursing care is provided primarily to adolescents and adults, age 16 and over. Patient care services include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, infusion therapy, central line care, teaching, and emotional support. Emotional support, patient/family teaching, and discharge planning are integral components of their nursing care. As part of the Mayo Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs.

Schedule options:

  • 8-hour rotating, every other weekend
  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend

Hematology/Oncology - EI73
This 24-bed unit is divided geographically into two 12-bed radial design areas with all private rooms and specializes in hematology and oncology. The unit provides inpatient nursing care to patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, various hematopoietic disorders, and solid tumor cancers. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery or death. Patient care services include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, infusion therapy, central line care, teaching, and emotional support. Emotional support, patient/family teaching, and discharge planning are integral components of their nursing care. As part of the Mayo Medical Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs.

Oncology - EI44
This 22-bed unit with a radial design specializes in oncology. The unit provides inpatient and outpatient nursing care to patients with solid tumors and serves as overflow for hematology patients. This unit is the designated inpatient hospice unit. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery or death. Patient care services include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, infusion therapy, central line care, teaching, and/or emotional support. As part of the Mayo Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs.
