Nursing in Florida

Nursing Orientation

Mayo Clinic in Florida offers a comprehensive and interactive Nursing Orientation program designed to assist nurse professionals to develop skills required to deliver and maintain Mayo Clinic's high-quality patient care. You can expect many opportunities for professional growth as a member of Mayo Clinic's dynamic nursing team.

Orientation overview

New members of the nursing team attend two days of general orientation followed by eight days of centralized nursing orientation consisting of classroom training and unit orientation. The second portion of orientation provides an introduction to the nursing philosophy, professional practice model, and policies and procedures at Mayo Clinic. Additional topics covered include:

  • Infection control
  • Quality management and patient safety
  • Shared decision-making
  • Communication
  • Computer documentation
  • Medication administration
  • Clinical skills review

Mayo Clinic offers a Nursing Graduate Orientation Program and an extended Registered Nurse Residency Program to assist new graduate nurses in successfully transitioning from nursing student to professional nurse.

Orientation timeline

After completion of central orientation, you'll begin individualized unit orientation with an assigned preceptor who works collaboratively with the unit-based educator. Each nursing unit has a designated clinical educator to coordinate both a didactic and clinical orientation, a comprehensive and innovative learning approach. Opportunities for clinical-specialty orientation include placements in critical care settings.

The average length of orientation with a preceptor for the new graduate nurse is:

  • Intensive Care Unit — six months
  • Emergency Department — six months
  • Intermediate Care — three months
  • Medical/Surgical — two months (may vary based on unit)

The average length of orientation with a preceptor for an experienced nurse will vary based on skill level and unit. Each orientation is designed to meet the specific needs of the employee based on individual experience and educational background.
