Nursing Graduate Orientation Program

The Nursing Graduate Orientation Program at Mayo Clinic in Florida is a comprehensive, interactive program designed to help new nursing professionals develop skills required to deliver and maintain Mayo Clinic's high-quality patient care. The program is one example of the many professional growth opportunities you'll experience as a member of Mayo Clinic's dynamic nursing team.

Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam and a registered nurse (RN) license from the Florida State Board of Nursing are required to begin orientation and work at Mayo Clinic.

Orientation overview

The Nursing Graduate Orientation Program assists new nurses in successfully transitioning from recent graduate to nursing professional. New members of the nursing team attend two days of general orientation followed by eight days of central nursing orientation, consisting of classroom training and unit orientation.

The orientation provides an introduction to nursing philosophy, professional practice model, and policies and procedures at Mayo Clinic.

Additional topics covered include:

  • Infection control
  • Quality management and patient safety
  • Shared decision making
  • Communication
  • Computer documentation
  • Medication administration
  • Clinical skills review

Orientation timeline

After completion of central orientation, you'll begin individualized unit orientation with an assigned preceptor who works collaboratively with the unit-based educator. Each nursing unit has a designated clinical educator to coordinate both didactic and clinical orientations, a comprehensive and innovative learning approach. Opportunities for clinical-specialty orientation include placements in critical care settings.

Preceptor orientations and average lengths are:

  • Intensive Care Unit — six months
  • Emergency Department — six months
  • Intermediate Care — three months
  • Medical/Surgical — two months (may vary based on unit)

Nurse colleagues within the organization assist and support new nursing graduates throughout their journey at Mayo Clinic. Each orientation is designed to meet your specific needs based on individual experience and educational background.
