Mayo Clinic offers a variety of medical coding job types, with education and experience requirements varying depending on the role. Required credentials may include:
Coder trainees participate in Mayo Clinic's Coder Training Program. This learning experience provides trainees with additional coding curriculum and Mayo Clinic-specific coding preparation. Upon completion of the program, individuals are able to code and finalize hospital outpatient charts, and they're prepared to be candidates for hospital coder I positions.

These medical coders use their education and training to accurately and efficiently assign International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnosis codes as determined by a thorough analysis of the hospital outpatient electronic medical record.
Typically, employees are promoted to this role upon successful completion of the trainee program. This position has the same eligibility criteria as hospital coder I — trainee.
Employees in hospital coder II positions perform medical coding on hospital inpatient records, as well as clinic and hospital outpatient services associated with the inpatient visit. The inpatient cases are complex and require a higher degree of experience with assigning ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes.
Candidates for this position must have an associate or bachelor's degree in a health care-related program, along with at least one of these credentials: RHIT, RHIA or CCS.
Individuals not currently employed in a medical coding role at Mayo Clinic must have a minimum of three years of inpatient coding experience, or a bachelor's degree in any field with a CCS and five years of inpatient coding experience.
Internal candidates must have a minimum of six months of experience in a medical coding role at Mayo Clinic and a minimum of six months of work experience associated with outpatient ICD-9 diagnosis coding.
These medical coders review medical record documentation to assign accurate Current Procedural Terminology, Fourth Edition (CPT-4) procedure codes and appropriate modifiers for procedures performed in the clinic setting or procedure rooms. They may also assign ICD-9 diagnosis codes.

This second level of the surgical coder position reviews medical record documentation to assign accurate CPT-4 procedure codes and appropriate modifiers for procedures performed in the operating room, as well as complex services performed in a procedure room. They may also assign ICD-9 diagnosis codes.
To be eligible for this position, candidates must have an associate or bachelor's degree in a health care-related program, along with at least one of these credentials: RHIT, RHIA or CCS.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must have at least five years of experience with CPT-4 surgical coding or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure coding for outpatient, inpatient or Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Group (MS-DRG) assignment, as well as either:
Quality reviewers and trainers develop and maintain all medical coding training curriculum, train new medical coding staff and cross-train current medical coding staff. They also administer a quality-review program by evaluating staff members' work and develop and deliver relevant education.

Coordinators are medical coding subject matter experts for coding staff. They lead and participate in projects and on multidisciplinary work groups related to internal quality reviews, compliance initiatives, reporting initiatives, benchmarking, research and analysis, continuous improvement opportunities, and other customer-requested projects.
To be eligible for this position, candidates must have at least five years of experience with CPT-4 surgical coding or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure coding for outpatient, inpatient or MS-DRG assignment, as well as either:
Supervisors oversee and direct staff, perform tactical planning and carry out strategic plans. They ensure staff have adequate resources and serve as liaisons between other constituents inside and outside of Mayo Clinic. Supervisors also act as medical coding subject matter experts for coding staff, members of the management team and other sections within the revenue cycle at Mayo Clinic.
