Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT)

Research

Mayo Clinic doctors have extensive experience in the use of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) as treatment for people who have advanced tumors or recurrent colon and rectal cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body.

Research at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota shows that people who have locally advanced primary colon or rectal cancer who received IORT have improved disease control and survival rates compared with people who did not receive IORT. Similar results have been seen in people who have other cancers.
