Program Details

Undergraduate Internships

Undergraduate interns will be assigned to shadow engineers and will participate in engineering activities, such as:

• Investigating new project requests
• Interacting with physicians and researchers
• Researching different technologies and options for solving problems
• Participating in design meetings and project reviews
• Testing and documentation of components or even entire systems
• Exposure to design tools such as our 3-D solid modeling tools, schematic capture and board layout tools, modeling and simulation tools
• Simple fabrication and assembly of devices and systems
• Deployment of devices and project retrospective activities

Mentors

Each intern will be assigned to a supervisor, typically one of the Unit Heads within the Division of Engineering. The interns will work with a number of different engineers within the Division who will be responsible for giving the intern technical direction and ensuring successful completion of the assignments.

Final paper / presentation

At the end of the internship, the intern will be asked to prepare a retrospective of their internship activities and to present this information at a Division meeting. This presentation is a Mayo Clinic requirement and may be in addition to any academic requirements for papers or presentations.

Graduate Internships

Graduate interns will be assigned to activities by current engineering staff. Once assigned to a project, the first challenge will be to determine a project approach. The intern will typically review literature and prior projects, working with the physicians, researchers and engineering staff to select an approach that will lead to a successful project. The intern will be assigned to work with one of our engineers who act as the intern's on-site advisor. The intern will work within one of our project teams and will be responsible for providing time estimates and progress reports.

Final paper / presentation

At the end of the internship, the intern will be asked to prepare a retrospective of their internship activities and to present this information at a Division meeting. They will aid the project technical leaders in transitioning the uncompleted portions of their work to Division staff. These are Mayo Clinic requirements and may be in addition to any academic requirements for papers or presentations.
