Communication Technology at Mayo Clinic offers a wide array of services and is composed of many areas, including video preproduction, postproduction, DVD authoring, 3D animation, Web casting, photography, video conferencing, and audio visual support. The use of video, graphics, animation, and other communication technologies support every aspect of Mayo's clinical practice, research, and education.

Internships covering all areas of video production and postproduction are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Competition for this program is intense. An individual's qualifications and Mayo Clinic's needs and funding determine whether an applicant will be offered a position.

Hands-on Experience

The Video Production and Postproduction internship is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience while working with Mayo Clinic professionals. Examples of projects you will work on during the internship include:

  • Create graphics and animations in After Effects to incorporate into a project
  • Create or recreate projects in Final Cut Pro or in Avid
  • Encode finished projects to appropriate professional formats for burning to CD
  • Learn professional standards to encode projects to MPEG 2 for burning to DVD
  • Create menu graphics for a DVD for compatible playback on desktop computers and home professional DVD players
  • Author projects in DVD Studio Pro

Due to the hands-on nature of this internship, you will be helping to produce excellent work that adheres to professional industry standards. This work will be done in a tightly scheduled environment using the latest state-of-the-art tools. You will gain the skill to anticipate technical problems before they happen and quickly resolve them when they do. The internship will also provide you with valuable experience in managing multiple client projects and working in tandem with others in a group environment.

At the end of the internship, interns will have a finished project on tape, CD, and DVD. Interns should also have attained the professional knowledge and skills to perform these tasks in the future.

Orientation

The Video Production and Postproduction internship begins with a two-week general orientation of the department and the duties and services to be performed. The remainder of the internship will be spent following a structured curriculum with hands-on training. You will work under the close supervision of a mentor and working along side staff as needed.

Other Activities

The internship program not only offers an educational work experience, but also provides an opportunity to live, socialize, and have fun with other intern students from around the country.
