Infectious Diseases in Minnesota

Overview

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has two divisions that treat infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases, established in the 1950s, consists of 30 consultants, 10 fellows, eight registered nurses, and seven paramedical staff. The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases has four pediatric infectious diseases board-certified consultants who work closely with other division colleagues to treat infectious diseases in children and adolescents.

Both divisions are consultative practices for patients in the hospital and in the outpatient setting. The divisions' goal is to identify and effectively treat infections that arise from exposure to infectious diseases, or that follow organ transplantation and other surgical procedures. They offer the following specialized services:

• Hospital-Based Consultation — offers specialized treatment for patients who are hospitalized with infections or who develop infections while hospitalized for other reasons. In addition to our general infectious diseases service, four focus groups specialize in identifying and treating infections in the intensive care unit, infections following orthopedic surgery or organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation, and infections associated with cancer.
• Outpatient Infectious Disease Consultation — offers specialized evaluations for patients referred by their physicians for the evaluation and management of suspected or proven infections.
• The Mayo Clinic HIV Clinic — provides specialized treatment for patients who have been exposed to or diagnosed with HIV or AIDS.
• Travel and Tropical Medicine Clinic — educates and immunizes people traveling to foreign countries and treats patients returning from a foreign country with symptoms of infection.
• The Mayo Clinic Tuberculosis Center  — develops and delivers training for medical and public health professionals in tuberculosis prevention and control and provides medical consultation for complex medical cases involving tuberculosis.
