Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy

Treatment in Florida

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has been offered through the Department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville since 2002. More than 1,500 treatments were done in 2004. Read more about the conditions treated with IMRT, how it works and its advantages.

New equipment added in 2004 makes it possible to use the pinpoint precision of stereotactic radiosurgery on organs throughout the body, instead of just the brain. New technology also allows radiation treatments to be synchronized to the movement caused by a patient's breathing. This advance, called respiratory gating, focuses a high dose of radiation on the tumor while reducing exposure to normal tissue.

Our radiation oncology services are accredited by the American College of Radiology, which certifies our commitment to quality. The equipment at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is checked, verified and maintained according to strict standards and schedules.

Radiation therapy services are part of the Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center. Eligible cancer patients may enroll in clinical research studies designed by Mayo researchers and others.

Treatment Team

Mayo Clinic emphasizes a collaborative approach to care. IMRT involves a team from Radiation Oncology. The team consists of physicians, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, oncology nurses, and administrative staff. The medical staff work together to develop a treatment plan appropriate for each patient. Radiation oncologists also coordinate therapy with other physicians involved in each patient's care.

Each radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville specializes in treating certain types of cancers. This specialization assures patients they are receiving care from someone who is highly skilled at treating their cancer.
