Since the brain can shift during surgery, brain-mapping techniques and intraoperative MRI are used to create accurate pictures of the brain. These images guide the neurosurgeon to remove only the tissue that needs to be removed and focus on the targeted region for therapy. This leaves functional brain tissue untouched. That helps preserve motor function, language and other important brain functions.
