A hysterectomy is surgery to remove your uterus (partial hysterectomy) or both your uterus and your cervix (total hysterectomy). Sometimes, hysterectomy also includes removal of your ovaries and fallopian tubes (total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy).
Hysterectomy might be needed for treatment of large or symptomatic uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, gynecologic cancer, persistent abnormal or heavy vaginal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, or other conditions.
