Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Symptoms

While many patients may never have symptoms, others may develop problems at any point. Symptoms may gradually appear during the teenage years of some patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. However, other patients may remain asymptomatic during their teens and young adulthood and present with symptoms in middle age or later.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Dyspnea — Shortness of breath, especially after eating
  • Angina — Chest pain that occurs during periods of mental or physical tension or exertion
  • Syncope — A dizzy or fainting feeling after exertion
  • Palpitations — Strong or irregular heartbeat
