Hospital Internal Medicine in Florida

Overview

Physicians in the Division of Hospital Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida help care for hospitalized patients and education of residents. The physicians, called hospitalists, are dedicated to coordinating communication with referring physicians to enhance patient care in the setting of a supportive and challenging learning environment.

Hospitalists triage all admissions to the Internal Medicine Teaching Services at Mayo Clinic hospital. All requests for admissions to an internal medicine service are routed through the medical admitting officer, who is the hospitalist on call. Hospitalists provide 24-hour inpatient medical consultation service.

Hospitalist consultations provide a differential diagnosis and a plan of evaluation and management for diverse medical problems occurring on nonmedical services. Follow-up care is an inherent part of each consultation. Upon request, hospitalists will provide a preoperative assessment of medical risk and participate in the perioperative management of various internal medicine problems. The emphasis is on consultative services.
