Referring a Patient

The Mayo Clinic Referring Physicians Service is the primary contact for physicians making patient appointments and arranging telephone consultations with Mayo staff members. In addition, the Referring Physicians Service will help answer questions and work to resolve any concerns about Mayo services. Call (800) 533-1564, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Inpatient/Emergency Transfers

For patients requiring hospitalization, please call the triage nursing staff at (507) 255-5591 prior to sending a patient to the Saint Marys Hospital Emergency Department.

Continuity of Care

Communication with the patient's referring provider is critical to good patient experience. A summary of medical recommendations will be forwarded to the referring physician, with the patient's approval. In addition, HIM will encourage each patient to discuss treatment recommendations directly with the referring physician as part of his or her ongoing care.
