The Division of Hospital Internal Medicine (HIM) at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota includes physicians whose primary role is to provide general medical care in the hospital. These doctors, also called hospitalists, work closely together with nurse practitioners, bedside nurses, physician assistants, and other hospital staff to provide thoughtful, safe, collaborative, and effective medical care.
Due to Hospital Internal Medicine's inpatient focus, patients are almost exclusively referred into HIM by their local physician or hospital, as opposed to Primary Care Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine, which accept both direct patient appointments and referrals.
The scope of the Hospital Internal Medicine practice includes primary medical care in the hospital as well as consultative services for patients who require surgery. The majority of hospitalists at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota have completed subspecialty or other advanced training, and many contribute to ongoing research at Mayo Clinic. Hospitalists also serve as teachers for medical students, residents, and hospital medicine fellows.
Hospital Internal Medicine staff are part of a larger, integrated Mayo Clinic team in Minnesota that includes outpatient physicians, some of whom may also work in the hospital. Collectively, the team's goal is to combine the latest evidence-based medicine with thoughtful consideration of each patient's needs to foster wellness and healing.
