Hodgkin's lymphoma

Overview

Mayo Clinic is a nationally recognized center of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma (also called Hodgkin's disease). Mayo Clinic has one of the largest groups of lymphoma treatment specialists in the U.S., and treats approximately 1,300 patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma each year.

Mayo Clinic is also a leader in lymphoma research. Mayo has received a National Cancer Institute Lymphoma SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant since 2002. One of the main goals of this research is developing more effective and less toxic treatments for lymphoma, including Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mayo Clinic conducts many clinical trials to test new therapies for the disease.

At Mayo Clinic, specialists in hematology, stem cell transplant, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and other areas work together to treat adults and children with Hodgkin disease. Mayo's integrated group practice gives patients rapid access to the expertise they need for their condition. Patients whose Hodgkin's lymphoma recurs may need intermittent treatment over several years. Mayo's coordinated approach takes into account all of a patient's health needs over the long term.

Diagnosis

Hodgkin's lymphoma can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are similar to influenza. Mayo Clinic uses advanced diagnostic tests such as PET scans when Hodgkin's lymphoma is suspected. Mayo specialists precisely classify and stage the lymphoma so that each patient receives the most appropriate treatment. Read more about Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis.

Treatment

Today, about 85 percent of people who receive initial treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma experience a complete remission. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and stem cell transplantation. Mayo is a nationally recognized leader in developing innovative treatments for Hodgkin's lymphoma and conducts many clinical trials of new therapies. About Hodgkin's lymphoma

Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, the body's disease-fighting network. In Hodgkin's lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system (called "B cells") grow abnormally and may accumulate there and in other organs. As the disease progresses, it compromises the body's ability to fight infection, and tumors develop. Eventually, Hodgkin's lymphoma can spread from the lymph nodes throughout the body.

Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of two types of cancers of the lymphatic system. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the other type, is far more common. Advances in diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma have helped make this once uniformly fatal disease highly treatable with the potential for full recovery.
