The Heart Transplant Team at Mayo Clinic is a multidisciplinary, highly organized team. It includes six cardiac surgeons and six cardiologists as well as support from dedicated transplant specialists in Dermatology, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, and Psychiatry.
The first cardiac transplant at Mayo Clinic was performed by this team in 1988. Each year roughly 27 patients receive a heart transplant at Mayo Clinic.
When Tom Dollins visits Mayo Clinic, he likes to stop by the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and visit with young people who are waiting for heart transplants.
