Since the program began in 1988, the Mayo Cardiothoracic Transplant Team has performed over 300 heart transplants. The program has consistently produced excellent outcomes with survival rates among the highest in the country and excellent patient and family satisfaction.
The heart transplant program is directed by surgical and medical specialists in heart and lung transplantation and staffed by specialists in adult and pediatric cardiology, infectious diseases, nephrology, thoracic diseases, anesthesiology, critical care medicine and pathology. Active laboratory research programs contribute to advancements and refinements in this important clinical field, resulting in innovative and better care for patients. An entire unit of the Mary Brigh building at Saint Marys Hospital is dedicated to heart and lung transplantation. This is a state-of-the-art facility that includes seven intensive care beds and 14 step-down beds.
Outpatient evaluation and care of patients before and after transplantation is done in the William J. von Liebig Transplant Center. This is located in the Charlton building on the Mayo Clinic campus. Mayo Clinic is affiliated with the local Ronald McDonald House and The Gift of Life Transplant House that provides accommodations for patients and families.
