Hearing Loss

Overview

The most common reason for hearing loss is aging. Over time, the wear and tear of noise damages the cochlea, a part of the inner ear. This form of hearing loss is known as presbycusis (pres-bih-KU-sis). Hearing loss can result from many other causes as well, including disease, injury, infection and earwax blockage. Mayo Clinic treats all forms of hearing loss.
